2018 Kx250f Top Speed

2018 Kx250f Top Speed

For motorcycles meant to deliver thrills off paved roads, reaching blistering high speeds may seem like an afterthought. Jumps, skids, and climbs provide enough excitement for most dirt bike riders. However, you have to arrive at the patch of earth first, so you might as well entertain yourself on the commute.

If that's where your head is at, we have a list of two-wheelers you're going to enjoy. Dirt bikes with off-road capabilities can manage speeds over 100 miles per hour with the right rider, conditions, and level of sanity. Here are the 12 fastest dirt bikes in the world.

Note: To keep our list focused on the dirt, we kept it to supermoto and dual-sport bikes weighing less than 450 pounds.

12. Honda CRF 450R

  • Top speed: 87 mph

While not the fastest dirt bike on this list, the Honda CRF 450R is still legendary. In the right hands, this bike can beat many of the faster bikes of this list in a race. It still tops at 87 mph, which is plenty fast enough for most people. In terms of all-around performance, this bike is near the top of the list.

11. Yamaha WR 250R

  • Top speed: 89 mph

Weighing in at 295 pounds wet, the Yamaha WR250R has more heft than you might expect at first glance. Nonetheless, the 250cc engine provides enough oomph to get the road-worthy version up to a top speed of 88.8 miles per hour (as tested by Motorcycle News). For sprints to 60 miles per hour, the WR250R takes 8.71 seconds to hit the mark.

10. Suzuki DR-Z400SM

  • Top speed: 94 mph

At first glance, this bike does not look like a traditional dirt bike. It looks more like a cross between a street bike and a dirt bike. But don't let its appearance fool you, the Suzuki DR-Z400SM is an extremely capable dirt bike.

It tops out at respectable 94 mph. Its acceleration is nothing to sneeze at either, able to go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.54 seconds. This bike needs the right rider who can handle it in messy conditions, but in the right hands, it's a great bike.

9. Honda XR650L

  • Top speed: 98 mph

Another great all-around bike from Honda, the XR650L offers speed and quality for a fair price. While not able to top 100 mph, this bike can still fly. The difference between 100 and 98 mph is negligible for most riders. Its acceleration won't blow you away, but it is still respectable. The bike can reach 60 mph in 5.83 seconds. Don't sleep on this classic, there's a reason it's been around for over 20 years.

8. Kawasaki KLR650

  • Top speed: 98 mph

Like a few other bikes on our list, the Kawasaki KLR 650 skews more to the street side of things, but its off-road capabilities are solid. The redesign between 2006 and 2008 earned rave reviews, and as competitors entered the scene it remained an excellent value (it's still a perennial best-seller).

In terms of speed, it can hit 98 miles per hour in its fastest editions (i.e., 2006 models) and still reach speeds in the mid-90s in later models. It hits 60 miles per hour in 6.04 seconds from a stop.

7. Husqvarna FE 501 S

  • Top speed: 101.5 mph

With 58 horsepower from the 510cc engine, the 2016 Husqvarna FE 501 street model delivers plenty of power for anyone hunting for a dual-sport machine. Combined with the weight savings delivered in this model, this bike can match the top speed of 650 editions from before the manufacturer's KTM era.

In fact, the 501 dirt model broke 100 in informal testing. Street models will match the 101.5 miles per hour once clocked on the TR650 by Motorcycle News. Sprinting to 60 takes about 4.5 seconds.

6. MuZ Baghira

  • Top speed: 102 mph

Since its disappearance in 2007, the MuZ Baghira has endured as one of the classics of the dual-sport segment. For a bike considered more street than trail-worthy, it takes a while (5.22 seconds) to hit 60 miles per hour.

However, its power output sent it to impressive top speeds, once topping 102 miles per hour in tests. Exhilaration on- and off-road was always Baghira's biggest selling point, and those who can track one down used can get it cheap.

5. BMW G650 XChallenge

  • Top speed: 104 mph

When you think of BMW, you probably don't envision ripping a dirt bike around trails. However, the BMW G650 XChallenge dirt bike can easily hang with other more traditional bikes. Topping out at 104 mph this bike has all the power you'd expect from BMW. If you're looking to keep it classy in the trials this bike is perfect.

4. ATK Intimidator

  • Top speed: 110 mph

Whether packing the Maico 620 or 700 engine, the limited edition ATK Intimidator has long been in the running for fastest dirt bike in the world. The 700 houses a 685cc two-stroke engine capable of 78 hp for a bike with a dry weight of just 238 pounds. Compared to the fastest dirt bikes that have ever been tested, an ATK Intimidator would have a clear edge with the right modifications. Racers have pushed the 700 Intimidator to speeds over 110 mph.

3. Beta 450RS

  • Top speed: 110.9 mph

You'd be surprised to learn that this sleek dirt bike is street legal in the United States. Beta might not be a familiar company to many people in the U.S., but this bike makes a name for itself.

With a top speed of almost 111 mph, it has more speed than you could ever want. If you want a fast bike that can rip around trails but also cruise down the road, you can't go wrong with the Beta 450RS.

2. Aprilia RXV 5.5

  • Top speed: 113 mph

At 303 pounds, the Aprilia RXV 5.5 is a heavy bike that rides light. Most of this weight can be attributed to the 549cc engine, which puts out 55 horsepower. This bike topped 100 mph with ease, getting all the way up to 113 mph.

Its weight didn't hamper the bike's acceleration either, as it was able to get from 0 to 60 in 4.16 seconds. While this bike comes in heavier models that offer a little more power, in terms of bang for your buck, the RXV 5.5 is your best bet.

1. KTM 450 SX-F

  • Top speed: 123 mph

KTM always produced bikes challenging for fastest two-wheeler on the planet. In the dirt bike category, the 450 SX-F was a Motocross Champion under rider Ryan Dungey.

The 449cc engine is used to power a bike weighing just 237 pounds. Equipped with the right rider, KTM 450 bikes will win races among any sprinting dirt bikes. With a top speed of 123 mph, nothing under 450 pounds can compare, so feel free to "drop the hammer."
