Hello all you TTR250 fans out there and good day/night/afternoon/morning,
I made this thread to share my thoughts on what i think about our beloved ttr250 but please feel free to share your thoughts aswell. I'm going to start with the good points as it is why i have a ttr and absolutely adore them for what they are and can do. Please keep in mind this is my view though and maybe your view is different. This will be just my thoughts and some might not apply or be noticeable to you.
Suspension setup is too high standard even with the suspension fully adjusted so it makes it hard to balance or use your foot to save yourself from droping the bike on uneven ground when going slow
Chain block and front chain gaurds not really designed well enough to fit a 14t front sprocket as it wears excessively without modifying
The standard intake box does not have enough ventilation to support a new muffler & jet upgrade without trimming the air duct (snorkel) pipe or fitting vents
The kickstarter seems to sits in the wrong spot and can cause problems if the kickstart lever boss is not in good working order
The frame has a tendency to brake at the front muffler mount because the frame mount is'nt strong enough but the heavy standard muffler adds to this trouble
The carburetor is hard to service without braking the float pin support mount due to the pin being exceedingly hard to remove
The one chain cam setup has a tendency to jump teeth on the cam chain sprocket and bend valves if the cam chain and components are not maintained properly
Headlight & wiring capacity leaves a bit to be desired but not much different on most bikes
That said the good points outway the bad in my view and most problems can be eliminated quite easy with modifying, fitting aftermarket parts and proper maintenence. I will always adore the TTR250's and swear by them for an all round reliable trail bike.
Jarrah.

Check that the cam chain isn't worn (slack) and that the tensioner is working properly.
See http://ttr250.activeboard.com/t59506155/how-much-free-play-on-a-cam-chain/

A search on "timing chain" will throw up a few threads that might also be helpful

My response
I love how the suspsension set up it feels when turning corners and is easy to maneuver around corners ......the ride quality is pretty good, softer than my WRR, the rear shock on the TTR is better than my WRR, front grip on the WR is slightly better than the TTR
Very comfortable and good riding position....... agreed & the TTR seat is better than the WRR
Plenty of gears with the 6 speed gearbox fitted on all models which gives a fairly good choice of sprocket gear setups eg. 13/48, 13/50,13/52 ect.. ....I dropped the front to 13, much better
Smooth engine with good power to weight ratio and can be riden slow in tight trails or fast in open trails so the versitility of this engine is great......flat torque curve unlike the WRR that is more like a 2T, WRR has more power
Fuel capacity and fuel consumption is great.......... the TTR uses more fuel than the WRR
Built reliable and can withstand just about anything you throw at it if maintained properly.......very true
Quite light being a 4stroke and in comparison of the WR the TTR is lighter........not light but slightly better than the WRR, not a lot in it
Most parts are easily sourced and can be bought cheap enough,,,,,true
Alot of parts from other models will interchange,,,,,air filter & levers are interchangeable between the TTR & WRR
Suspension setup is too high standard even with the suspension fully adjusted so it makes it hard to balance or use your foot to save yourself from droping the bike on uneven ground when going slow.......TTR is lower than the WRR & the TTR seat is easier to slide across on, I'm 5'6" & find the TTR ok but the WRR is bloody tall
Chain block and front chain gaurds not really designed well enough to fit a 14t front sprocket as it wears excessively without modifying.....no issues as yet
The standard intake box does not have enough ventilation to support a new muffler & jet upgrade without trimming the air duct (snorkel) pipe or fitting vents.....it's ok for what the bike is
The kickstarter seems to sits in the wrong spot and can cause problems if the kickstart lever boss is not in good working order.....at least it's got a kickstarter
The frame has a tendency to brake at the front muffler mount because the frame mount is'nt strong enough but the heavy standard muffler adds to this trouble,,,,, I run a aftermarket muffler
The carburetor is hard to service without braking the float pin support mount due to the pin being exceedingly hard to remove.....never had to touch it
The one chain cam setup has a tendency to jump teeth on the cam chain sprocket and bend valves if the cam chain and components are not maintained properly.....no issue so far
Headlight & wiring capacity leaves a bit to be desired but not much different on most bikes.....it's a dual sport, better than my last two XR's
Suspension setup is too high standard even with the suspension fully adjusted so it makes it hard to balance or use your foot to save yourself from droping the bike on uneven ground when going slow
Ok for me, its tall, but so am I
Chain block and front chain gaurds not really designed well enough to fit a 14t front sprocket as it wears excessively without modifying
No trouble yet
The standard intake box does not have enough ventilation to support a new muffler & jet upgrade without trimming the air duct (snorkel) pipe or fitting vents
Aftermarket can no mods
The kickstarter seems to sits in the wrong spot and can cause problems if the kickstart lever boss is not in good working order
Cant find a kickstarter on mine
The frame has a tendency to brake at the front muffler mount because the frame mount is'nt strong enough but the heavy standard muffler adds to this trouble
Ill keep an eye out for that one
The carburetor is hard to service without braking the float pin support mount due to the pin being exceedingly hard to remove
Only had to change the rubber
The one chain cam setup has a tendency to jump teeth on the cam chain sprocket and bend valves if the cam chain and components are not maintained properly
I changed mine
Headlight & wiring capacity
Mine appears to have a headlight but dont know why they bothered
